'PATHWAYS TO VOCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT'

VESA, working through the Leicestershire Consortium for Education Business Links (LCEBL), successfully bid for European Social Funding (ESF) to address social inclusion issues at KS4 during the academic years 2005/6 and 2006/7.

The purpose of this project is to focus on vulnerable young people in Years 10 and 11, with low skill levels, who are unlikely to make a successful transition to continuing education, training or employment at 16. The project will enable students to gain vocational qualifications and / or units, participate in an extended work experience and to develop their key skills. It is anticipated that the students participating in these activities will, as a result, have improved their self-esteem and increased their aspirations, thus providing them with the confidence to progress sucessfully at the end of their compulsory education.

The schools / colleges invited to be part of this project have been targeted, as the ESF Criteria demanded that the students involved came from deprived wards. 120 students from 9 schools, (4 City and 5 County), embarked on their 'personalised programme' from September 2005.

VESA will be managing the project on a day-to-day basis, and will have responsibility for evaluating the impact of the various work-related achievements on student achievement and motivation. In addition, a particular feature of the project will be that all the ESF schools will use the PLUS strategy to improve students' basic skills. Over the next two years many lessons are likely to be learnt, which will be disseminated at a range of local conferences and through the VESA Website and Newsletter.
