The Diplomas are a central part of the Governments 14-19 Education Reforms. Introduced in 2008, the Diploma is a qualification for 14-19 year olds that combines practical and theoretical achievement into one qualification. The emphasis is on supporting students to understand why skills and knowledge are important, particularly in a work-related environment, as well as developing skills and knowledge relevant to the chosen subject area.
The Leicester City Area 13-19 Consortium manages the diplomas across the city and has delegated the VESA 13-19 Education Support Agency to coordinate all aspects of diploma development and implementation. It oversees the contracts, monitors funding streams and works closely with the various colleges and schools in the city that will deliver the full entitlement of all 17 Diploma lines in the coming years.
VESA staff who lead on Diploma developments have also been engaged in a programme of Post 16 options events for Year 11 students and their parents in City schools and will also be involved in Year 9 options events. Their inputs aim to improve the understanding of students and parents about the Diploma offer in Leicester.
